Look at that! It’s Sunday again. It’s cold here in Richmond (well, cold by Richmond standards, which means the high is somewhere near freezing), but that white stuff hasn’t started falling from the sky yet, so life is still going on as usual. I was planning to be out of town this weekend, but a last-minute change left me with today for laziness, and I am not complaining. My Sony Touch e-reader arrived this week, and I am now enjoying my first foray into book polygamy as a result. My first e-book? A galley of Peggy Orenstein’s Cinderella Ate My Daughter, out this week from HarperCollins. And in hardcover, I’m finishing American Rose by Karen Abbott, who visited Fountain Bookstore yesterday and was every bit as fabulous as I expected. (Stay tuned for a Bare Necessities post from her this week, too.)
This week on the blog began with six sentences, two paragraphs, and one book title I wish I’d written. Sometimes a girl just needs a little inspiration, and there’s nothing like revisiting gorgeous writing to get it done. On Tuesday, Joe Foster from Above the Treeline visited with an awesome guest post about the only book search tool you’ll ever need (seriously), really, I cannot say enough good things about the service they’re providing. Whether you’re a blogger, bookseller, or serious reader, Edelweiss will revolutionize the way you track forthcoming releases and plan your reading. You know. If that’s what you’re into.
I reviewed two wonderful books this week, Randi Hutter Epstein’s Get Me Out: A History of Childbirth from the Garden of Eden to the Sperm Bank and You Know When the Men Are Gone by Siobhan Fallon, a collection of eight linked stories about life on military bases in Fort Hood, Texas and Baghdad, Iraq. Hutter Epstein shared her Bare Necessities about the best—and craziest—books about babymaking, and Fallon will be here this week to share her five favorite books.
It was a busy week off the blog as well. I attended my first meeting of the James River Writers board of directors (so excited to be part of this fantastic group), spent Friday being bookseller-for-a-day at Fountain (really…they left me to run the shop alone and everything) while Kelly and some of the staff attended Winter Institute, and got a peek at the finished copies of the first book I officially blurbed. Photos to come.
In the coming week, I’ll be reviewing Hannah Pittard’s highly anticipated and (deservedly) widely praised debut The Fates Will Find Their Way, recapping Karen Abbott’s event at the Fountain, and discussing Cinderella Ate My Daughter, which, lemme tell ya, is smart, insightful, and more than a little bit frightening in what it reveals about American culture and the way we’re raising girls. If you can’t wait, I’m sharing quotes from it over on my Tumblr.
Also in exciting news: The Morning News announced the finalists (and the judges! Woot for my pal Michele Filgate!) for their annual Tournament of Books, and I’m thinking about starting a bracket pool. The Reading Ape gives a very nice breakdown of the contenders and his predictions, and I swear, I’d be linking to his post even if he didn’t say nice things about me.
Now I’m off to spend the day finishing my two (TWO!) current reads, and if I get really brave, I’ll begin my Bookrageous poetry reading assignments, Anne Carson’s The Autobiography of Red, In the Ghost-House Acquainted by Kevin Goodan, and Skid by Dean Young.
What are you reading this weekend?

So did I! It just arrived on Friday, and I’ve uploaded a huge number of classics onto it, just so I’ll have them readily available, and I’ve grabbed a few galleys from Netgalley, but it may be a few weeks before I get around to any actual reading on it. I’ll be interested to see how the actual reading experience compares to print. Hope you enjoy yours!

Oh I can’t wait for The Fates Will Find Their Way to arrive at my door, it’s the next Powell’s Indiespensable pick and it’s shipping on Wednesday! (Love the program) Right now I’m reading The Secret History which I am just loving, her writing is amazing (I think I’ll be over posting quotes on tumblr ha!)
Rebecca Joines Schinsky onJanuary 23rd, 2011 10:35 amHow fun! I loaded a few classics (including MOBY DICK, so I won’t have to carry a doorstop around with me), and I’m enjoying NetGalley immensely. The brief “blink” at pageturning took some adjusting at first, but I’m really liking the reading experience and the notetaking capabilities so far.
