The Sunday Salon 1.16.11

2011 at 9am     Posted by Rebecca Joines Schinsky

Happy Sunday to you all! After a super busy week, I’m happy to be coming to you from the quiet corner of my home living room. The husband and I spent last weekend in Charlottesville, VA on a belated anniversary getaway, and it was quite lovely (especially the meals at Bizou and Rapture and the time spent at New Dominion Bookshop and Blue Whale Books), but it is always nice to have a quiet weekend at home. I’m spending the day with You Know When the Men Are Gone by Siobhan Fallon, a collection of short stories due out from Amy Einhorn Books this week. It’s too early to say for sure, but the book is showing great promise, and I’ve heard nothing but raves from publishing and blogging friends alike.

It was another solid week here on the blog, and it began with a wonderful Bare Necessities post by one of my favorite booksellers, Geoffrey Jennings of Rainy Day Books. I reviewed Karen Abbott’s Sin in the Second City (and I think “Brothels and Madams and Whores, Oh My!” might be my favorite post title ever) and Kim Dana Kupperman’s I Just Lately Started Buying Wings. If you read creative nonfiction, particularly essays, you will not want to miss Kupperman’s excellent book.  On Thursday, I presented a round-up of some of the pieces I’ve featured on my Tumblr recently, and I wrapped up the week with reflections on the first book from my Fountain 360 in 365 project, Kelly Cutrone’s If You Have to Cry, Go Outside. Never thought I’d enjoy a self-help book, but there it is.

The first Bookrageous podcast of the year went live this week, and it’s all about our resolutions and predictions for 2011. The podcast has been a total blast, and I certainly hope you’ll take time to check it out, subscribe, and let us know what you’d like to hear on future episodes. We just wrapped the first part of a show on poetry, thanks to listener suggestions, and we’d love to do more along those lines this year.

Also: if you’ll be in New York for BEA this May, brace yourselves for what promises to be a totally Bookrageous party. Details to come.

Hope your Sunday is filled with just as much reading and relaxation—or equally exciting events—as mine. What are you reading this weekend?

You Know When the Men Are Gone was highlighted as a must-read in EW if I recall. You are definitely shooting for serious eclectic here. I love all the different stuff you’ve been reading. After church, I hope to read away my slight hangover in my comfy chair today.

The hubby and I had a bit of a rough Saturday, so I’m looking forward to watching some football while reading Anne of Green Gables (one of those classics I never got around to reading as a child). Have you received your e-reader yet??

I’m contemplating You Know When. Saw a bit about it in Oprah magazine this morning.

Love to find new to me independent bookstores. As to what is being read this weekend, I’ve a copy of The Southern Review at hand, purchased at my local independent bookstore yesterday, “Through Stone and Sea” and a poetry collection by Mark Strand….
