The Sunday Salon 1.2.11

2011 at 9am     Posted by Rebecca Joines Schinsky

Happy New Year!  I hope this first Sunday of 2011 finds you cozy and comfortable, recovering from Friday night’s festivities and looking to the week (and year) ahead.  As expected, I’m coming to you from my favorite corner of the couch, with a snoozing basset hound on my lap, and as at the beginning of most new years, I’m taking stock and setting goals and thinking about the ways in which I hope to make this year better than the last.

It’s been quiet around . the blog the last few weeks as holiday celebrations (and their attendant food comas) took priority, but there was some action. Team Bookrageous wrapped up the year with our tenth podcast, this time focusing on our favorite reads of 2010. I think it’s the best job Jenn, Josh, and I have done talking about books yet, and I can’t wait to see what we’ll do in the next year.  Author Peter Geye (Safe from the Sea) stopped by with a guest post about the writers he’d invite to Christmas dinner, and I dished about my backlist reading binge.

The coming week will bring a review of Andrew Shaffer’s Great Philosophers Who Failed at Love, a continuation of the backlist conversation, a peek at my 2011 reading goals, and a discussion of the craft and art of writing from Roger Rosenblatt’s Unless It Moves the Human Heart. I’m two-thirds of the way through it now, and I am loving it—an elegant exploration of what it means to write, what works (and what doesn’t), and the function of writing and storytelling in our lives and our society. A perfect book to begin the year with, if you ask me.

And now I’m headed back to the last reading/napping/Mad Men-marathon day of pajama-clad relaxation before business gets under way for 2011. Hope yours is equally peaceful, and here’s to another year of great books.

I’m looking forward to hearing about your criticism reads, especially How Fiction Works. I should probably flip through it again sometime myself…

It’s amazing how quickly holidays (and days off work) go by isn’t it? I feel confident that next week at work — the first full week back in three — will drag like nothing I’ve ever felt before. **sigh**

Hope that 2011 brings with it more fun shit!;)
