Sleep, Sun, and Sarah Vowell

2011 at 8am     Posted by Rebecca Joines Schinsky

Or what we like to call Sunday in my house.

Spring came in full force this week and brought it with long walks through the park, lazy afternoons enjoying coffee and cocktails al fresco, and the precipitous decline in motivation that can only be Spring Fever. So I’ll be spending the day following the hound’s lead,  moving from one sunny spot to the next, dozing when I feel like it, and soaking up the all-around delightfulness of a near-perfect weekend.

And it’s a near-perfect weekend following up a really fantastic week. I spent Thursday and Friday in Charlottesville, VA (about an hour from Richmond) at the Virginia Festival of the Book, where I had a chance to see wonderful panel discussions, spend time with a few of my favorite partners in crime (Michele Young-Stone and Susan Gregg Gilmore), and meet authors and publishing industry folks I’ve only known on Twitter. It was two days of celebrating (Michele just found out that her debut novel The Handbook for Lightning Strike Survivors was selected for Target’s Emerging Author feature!) great food, great people, and thought-provoking conversations, and I came away with a lot to think about.

With Susan Gregg Gilmore at Mono Loco, home of the largest enchiladas I have ever attempted to eat.

I also got to visit Blue Whale Books and the store corgi Gizmo. She was a highlight of my day, but she couldn’t have been any less interested in getting up to greet yet another booksniffing human.

And that right there? That’s what the hound is doing out in the yard—and on the deck, the patio, and in her little hidey hole under the deck—and it’s pretty much what I’ll be doing for the rest of the day. So I’ll leave you this audio clip of Sarah Vowell reading from Unfamiliar Fishes (and you know I love me some Sarah Vowell) and this video from her recent appearance on Letterman, which I shared on my Tumblr last week. If it’s not enough to make you a Vowell convert (and to convince you she should have her own talk show or—at the very least—a standing sidekick gig on The Colbert Report), I don’t know what is. Happy Sunday, fishes!

OMG I do love her. I just never tire of her humor, and who really cares about her topic. You know it will teach you a few things, but that you will laugh your ass off along the way. And how cool to hook up with Susan again. She is just the nicest person, isn’t she? Not long ago I finished Bezellia and I LOVED it. I hope I get to see her at our UCF Book Festival in a few weeks.

I saw her on The Daily Show the other day and was so entertained! She really held her own up against Jon Stewart. :)
